Wobulenzi Reflection

As part of the Diploma Program, students need to take part in CAS. The school organized a trip to Wobulenzi Town Academy (WTA). During the course of the trip, we would volunteer and help out around the school, plus hold workshops in order to give back to the community by sharing the skills we have learnt in the past. These are the following ways in which we helped WTA:

Painting:
As per the academy's requested, we split into three groups and we painted the volunteers house, a mural at the bridge, and the mission statement which is required by the education board for every school. I took part in the painting of the volunteers house. This was a great opportunity for because i have never painted anything before, plus it gave me a chance to work with my fellow colleagues and we all tried something new together.

Landscaping:
Landscaping was a surprise to me, i have never done anything like digging or shoveling, but I am glad i took the opportunity and at least tried. This taught me how much trouble farmers go through in order to provide food for their family's by ploughing, planting and selling, it was a great experience.

Building the Shelter:
As a gift, we, as a class, decided to raise money by holding a non-uniform day in school, we raised approximately 800,000 ugx. The money raised was used to buy 4 goats, buy materials to build the shelter and to buy some fruits for the last day, when we all had lunch. Building the shelter was a challenge, I struggled a bit but at the end i succeeded and the end result was better than i thought it would be.

Breakdancing:
For my workshop, I offered breakdancing. I chose this workshop because it came to my attention that the students at WTA love dance, so i thought it would be a change to offer them something they have never been exposed to. This was a challenge for me because it's been a long time since i last danced, so gathering the technique and all that energy was a huge challenge, but in the end it worked. I was surprised at the amount of girls i had during one session, to my knowledge, not many girls like breakdancing because it requires a lot of energy and power, so they gave it a shot and most of them were pretty good. There were some amazing dancers in workshop, some may even be better than me, with practice. I hope i can go back in the near future and keep on teaching them the skills i learned in the past.
